Electrolytes 101


Whether you're training for Performance, Endurance, or General Fitness, understanding the importance of electrolytes can make a big difference in how you FEEL and PERFORM!

 

 


What are Electrolytes?

Electrolytes are essential minerals, which include; sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. 

 

These help to: 

Maintain fluid balance

Support nerve and muscle function

Regulate your body’s pH levels

Prevent cramping and fatigue

 

When you sweat, you LOSE not just water but also these critical minerals.

 

 


When Do You Need Them?

You’ll NEED to consider electrolytes if you’re:

Training longer than 60 minutes, especially in the heat!

Doing high-intensity workouts that cause heavy sweating!

Feeling signs of imbalance like muscle cramps, dizziness, fatigue, or headaches!

On a low-carb diet, which causes the body to excrete more sodium!

 

Even if you're drinking water regularly, without proper electrolytes, you can STILL become dehydrated!

 

 

 How to Replenish Them:

You can replenish electrolytes in the body through: 

 Electrolyte drinks/powders 

✅ Whole foods: bananas (potassium), leafy greens (magnesium), dairy (calcium), and salt (sodium)

✅ Table salt: Don't be afraid to lightly salt your food, especially if you're sweating a lot!

 



Why it Matters:

Ignoring electrolyte balance can lead to:

 Reduced performance and endurance

✅ Slower recovery

Muscle cramps
