We’ve all been there...
You’re in the middle of a great workout, and suddenly, your muscle seizes up with a painful cramp!
It’s frustrating ✅
Uncomfortable ✅
Can interrupt your progress ✅
So let’s break down WHY cramps happen and HOW you can prevent them!
🧠 Why Do Cramps Happen?
Muscle cramps during exercise are usually caused by either one or a combination of:
Dehydration: Your muscles need enough water and electrolytes to function properly and efficiently!
Overexertion: Pushing your muscles too hard without proper conditioning can lead to fatigue and cramping.
Poor warm-up or cool-down: Skipping these steps reduces muscle flexibility and increases cramp risk.
Lack of nutrients: Inadequate intake of key minerals can make your muscles more prone to cramping.
✅ How to Prevent Cramps
The EMA's top tips to help you stay cramp-free:
Hydrate before, during, and after your workout.
Eat a balanced diet rich in magnesium (spinach, nuts), potassium (bananas, sweet potatoes), and calcium (yogurt, leafy greens).
Warm up properly before your session and take time to cool down and stretch afterward.
Build intensity gradually - avoid sudden increases in workout difficulty or duration.
Listen to your body - fatigue is a signal, not a challenge.
💡 Quick Fix for On-the-Spot Cramps:
If a cramp does strike mid-workout, pause and gently stretch the affected muscle, hydrate, and take a few minutes to recover before continuing.
Cramps don’t have to derail your fitness goals. With the right approach, you can keep moving confidently and comfortably!
